Sexual Health Intervention Initiative: Suraksha

The Suraksha Project is a sexual health intervention initiative focused on HIV/AIDS prevention and women’s empowerment. It supports female sex workers (FSWs) through a comprehensive range of programs, including HIV/AIDS prevention, STI/STD counselling and treatment, condom promotion, behavioural change programs, and community organization efforts. The project has been instrumental in controlling the spread of sexual diseases while also empowering participants. Its primary goal is to contribute to the national effort to halt and reverse the HIV/AIDS epidemic among FSWs.

Key activities of the project include promoting sustainable safer sex behaviours among registered FSWs through outreach and peer-led programs, improving condom availability and usage among high-risk groups, and increasing overall condom uptake. The initiative also emphasizes enhancing clinical services, with objectives such as increasing regular medical checkups and promoting HIV testing. Furthermore, it aims to create a supportive environment by engaging with local power structures, addressing crisis interventions, and linking social protection services. The project also focuses on strengthening community involvement by organizing events and forming and reinforcing community groups.
